LAGOS — Former lawmakers under the aegis of the South West Agenda for Asiwaju, SWAGA, are set to regroup in Lagos as the group begins fresh mobilisation for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the emergence of the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Lagos State, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, in the 2027 elections.
The group is expected to formally launch “Lagos SWAGA 2.0”, a political mobilisation platform aimed at strengthening its grassroots structures and expanding engagement with voters across the state.
SWAGA, which mobilised support for Tinubu ahead of the 2023 presidential election, said it was repositioning its structures to secure another term for the President.
It also pledged to support Hamzat, who it said should succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the end of the current administration.
In a statement issued by the Steering Committee of Lagos SWAGA on Thursday, the group said the formal inauguration of its zonal, local government and Local Council Development Area, LCDA, structures would take place at the Eko FM Multi-Purpose Hall, LTV Compound, Coca-Cola Bus Stop, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja.
The initiative, tagged “Lagos SWAGA 2.0: Consolidating Grassroots Mobilisation and Deepening Political Engagements for the Renewed Hope Agenda”, is expected to bring together former legislators, political leaders, party stalwarts and grassroots mobilisers from Lagos and the South-West.
According to the organisers, the event is aimed at consolidating the movement’s grassroots structures and taking what it described as the policies and achievements of the Renewed Hope Agenda directly to communities across the state.
The statement said SWAGA 2.0 would focus on deepening community engagement, fostering inclusive governance and building a unified political structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
The major highlight of the gathering will be the swearing-in of newly appointed zonal coordinators and local administrators, largely drawn from among former legislators who served at the Lagos State and federal levels.
SWAGA said the officials would be responsible for driving its advocacy, mobilising communities and strengthening the organisation’s presence across the state’s 57 local government areas and LCDAs.
The group said serving and former federal and state functionaries, political leaders, community influencers and grassroots mobilisers from across the South-West were expected to attend the event.
The Lagos State Chairman of SWAGA, Hon. Mosuru Owolabi, is expected to chair the occasion, while other expected guests include Hon. Funmilayo Tejuoso and Hon. Remi Adebowale, a former Special Adviser on Civil Engagement to the Lagos State Governor.
The renewed mobilisation comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections, with political groups across the country strengthening their structures and grassroots networks.
SWAGA said its Lagos operation would build on its previous mobilisation efforts to create a broader and more coordinated political network ahead of the elections.
